Online Campus

Eva Burrows College is about providing learning opportunities, creating a learning culture and striving for excellence. We know that learning is lifelong and cannot be constrained within a set time and place.

We make education easy and accessible for you by delivering most of our higher education awards and vocational qualifications online. You will study the same course as an on-campus student but have the added advantage of developing a study plan that is scheduled to suit your lifestyle.

As a college birthed out of The Salvation Army, we have always been about pushing past boundaries and going to the people – a pursuit which has seen the Army’s work spread to 128 countries, transforming lives and communities for more than 150 years. It is the same mindset that pushes us to bring education to where you are with our online campus that truly has no boundaries.

At Eva Burrows College, our students are in all states and territories of Australia, and some students and teaching staff are even overseas. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you live and work - if you have a passion to learn, we are even more passionate still about equipping you for life, mission and service.

Accessing Online Learning

At Eva Burrows College, our undergraduate and postgraduate awards by coursework and most of our vocational qualifications are delivered online.

We know learning is important to you.  At the same time, we understand that family, work commitments and geographic proximity could limit your study plans. Additionally, we recognise no one size fits all. So depending on your chosen field of study, the online course will vary. For example, if you are learning a language, you may be encouraged to partake in regular online tutorials and sit online quizzes to help keep you on track through the formative stages of language learning.

ARK is the Learning Management Systems for all our higher education study while EBC Online is the online learning portal for our vocational qualifications. Both the LMS's are on the Moodle platform. The online learning systems are accessible to all students, whether you are studying on campus or online.

To study online, you will need to find around 9 hours (for undergraduates) and 12 hours (for postgraduates) per week for readings, activities and assessments for each unit. In general terms, you can expect our online courses to share at least some of the following common features:

Some components of an Online Unit

Live online sessions

These well-loved sessions are not lectures, but rather a highly interactive way of coming together to discuss particular questions, solve problems related to your field of study, swap ideas with other students and ask questions of your facilitator, course coordinator or lecturer.

Online assignments, tasks and grading

All your assignments and assessable tasks are submitted or completed online. Once marked, you can access your results and feedback online. You can also track your progress and performance in a current subject or across all of your current subjects.

Live or recorded lectures

Online students may participate in some on campus lectures in real time or watch recordings of lectures later.

Video content

Qualitative short teaching videos designed to introduce a particular concept or bring together key issues are a common feature of many of our courses.

Audio podcasts

Some of our courses also give you access to audio podcasts, allowing you to load audio content onto your preferred podcast technology to listen to when and where it suits you – even in the car or at the gym!

Interactive activities, lesson notes and quality content

Many of our courses feature a variety of assessable and non-assessable activities and content (such as quizzes, interactive presentations, self-assessment activities, discussion forums, group based activities and interactive lessons).

Readings

Engage with expertly curated reading materials made available to you online. Most of the time it will be possible to download these and read them on your preferred device (tablet, smartphone etc) or print, though some materials may only be available with an internet connection. You also have access to the growing library e-book collection.

Private arrangement video tutorials

You have the flexibility to consult with your lecturer online and also to book a private or small group tutorial (subject to availability) based on your needs.

Online student services

There are flexible student support options available so that you can be connected to your learning community no matter where you are. You can access support through our online portals, interact with and make appointments with our staff online.

Discussion Board/ Workbook or Reflective Journal

These tools help you to be proactive about their learning. Discussion boards allow students to engage with lecturers to discuss activities, share ideas and chat about the content for the week ahead. The journal could help track your progress as it is used to record student learning as they work through the course materials.

Computer Requirements, Academic, and IT Skills

To fully engage with learning experiences, you need to have access to a device such as a desktop computer or laptop and reliable internet connectivity.

In general, any desktop or laptop computer purchased in the past two years should be capable of meeting most of your learning needs.  Mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones may also enable access to many common communication and learning experiences; however, there are likely to be aspects of most courses where the computing capability of mobile devices alone is insufficient.

Many of the skills you use in everyday life can be transferred to online study. Online students are expected to be able to:

  • use a computer, tablet or smart phone
  • search the web for information
  • communicate using email
  • create basic word documents, spreadsheets and presentation
  • upload or download a file
  • express opinion or question an idea
  • skim through something to decide if it's worth reading
